New post on Slaw.ca: More design please.

My new post, Upgrading to Elegant, is up on Slaw. Related to that post, I would like to point out a couple of others who have recently called attention to the the death of “the publisher.”

  1. Richard Leiter, Two Observations About the State of Modern Law Book Publishing (Oct. 6, 2010).
  2. Sean Hocking, Legal “Publishing” Companies & People: That’s What We Need (Sept. 30, 2010).

These posts are important because they have correctly made the observation (and have called for action) that the business of legal publishing is less about the content these days and more about how to package, market, and maintain profit margins of existing content and public-generated data. That’s not to say there haven’t been advancements (e.g., Westlaw’s new WestSearch, Lexis Advance for Solo’s incorporation of Lexisweb), but they just aren’t of the jet pack variety.
